With the development and popularization of computer technology, digitizer is replacing analog device gradually. The measure and control technology plays a more and more important role in the process of production and scientific research. As the time going, the conventional instruments are emerging shortages. So it is necessary to improve conventional instruments.In this paper, the conception of the virtual instrument and the merits of which against conventional instrument has been introduced. Virtual instrument systems based on PC have been analyzed; the programming environment of virtual instrument LabVIEW has been introduced. On the foundation of the software and hardware platform mentioned above, around the anticipant target which the PC-based virtual instrument in this paper is expected to achieve, the design thought and the whole structure on which the virtual instrument was built are described in details. Following these thoughts as principles, a practical data collection system was designed.In this paper, The logic structure of the virtual function record system and its software and hardware design is detailed. On taking full advantage of the hardware capability of the data acquisition card and of the whole PC platform, utilizing the strong functions which LabVIEW possesses, a virtual X-Y function record instrument was developed, the functions of which including data collecting, data processing, data real time showing and data storage etc.. Through the actual verification, the virtual X-Y function record system can completely fulfill the request of data collection in low period repeat loading test. And certificated by another experiment, as long as the software arithmetic is slightly ameliorated, the virtual test instrument with this improvement can be used in data collection in dynamic tests.The virtual instrument is a newly arisen subject. This paper can provide ideas in further study on virtualization of other conventional experiment instrument. As long as being expanded slightly more, making use of the signals generating function of LabVIEW, combining the analog and digital signal output function which the data acquisition card has and the strong network function which PCs support, the virtual instrument system can carry out auto control, servo-control and long range control functions. The work of this paper still needs further study, the program still needs further optimization and improvement in practicability.
