As the development of computer, communication and network technology, the applicationprospect of stereoscopic video is more and more broad. Its application including 3D videoconference, 3DTV, remote robot control, remote medical service and so on. The study subjectof this thesis is the research on network faced stereoscopic video coding and transmission,which is the important part of the research of stereoscopic video application.First, a kind of stereoscopic video coding scheme based on H.264 was proposed in thisthesis. The experimental results showed that, compared with the scheme based on H.263, theproposed scheme improved the encoding performance a lot. Based on this scheme, a H.264standard compatible stereoscopic video coding scheme was proposed. The bit stream coded bythis new scheme is compatible with H.264 standard, while maintaining the codingperformance.Next, Intra prediction technology of H.264 was thoroughly analyzed in this thesis. And aseries of fast Intra prediction mode selection algorithms were proposed. Furthermore, some ofthese fast algorithms were adopted in the finally proposed fast algorithm. The experimentalresults proved that, compared with the original Intra prediction algorithm of H.264, the finallyproposed fast algorithm can reduce 80% of the coding time while maintaining the PSNR andbit rate.Then, transmission of stereoscopic video in network environment was studied in thisthesis. A series of stream stereoscopic video transmission methods were designed. According tothe characteristic of stereoscopic video, the traditional stream media network transmissionprotocols were expanded and amended.Finally, the research achievements of stereoscopic coding and transmission were utilizedin the practical system. A H.264 based stereoscopic video-on-demand prototype system wasdesigned and implemented in this thesis. This system implemented the functions includingstereoscopic video encoding, on-line watching of the stereoscopic video programs, release ofthe stereoscopic video programs, real-time decoding of the stereoscopic video as well as 3Ddisplay of the stereoscopic video.
