Knowledge explosion and technology development de'sire a great deal work to catch up, especially for university teachers and students, who should grasp the latest knowledge and the newest technology for their study and research. In that, a teaching and researching aid system which is based on Semantic Web was developed to aid university teachers and students in information retrieval and knowledge obtaining. This dissertation probes into the knowledge representation and reasoning approach of the system.Approaches to knowledge representation have been keeping one of the most important and the most popular subject in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Several influential approaches have been raised but none provides both effective representation and powerful reasoning mechanism. Knowledge representation language needs to be expandable, easy to learn and to use and suitable for different kinds of users. Web Ontology Language OWL, which is a recommendation of W3C, basically possesses the required qualities of being a representation language. This dissertation analyzes OWL and initiates an OWL knowledge representation approach which is based on current China discipline system. This approach divides all of the digital knowledge resources into 13 types, including courses, news, etc. It makes distinctions among the representation of different types of resources and uses OWL as the only one representation language. This dissertation introduces briefly the representation approach of each type of knowledge resource and explains detailed the Ontology representation approach of one of the knowledge resource-course. It analyzes the feasibility of applying the traditional depth-first algorithm and the broad-first algorithm into knowledge reasoning. It explains simply the implementation technology of this knowledge representation approach and the run result of the prototype system using several examples. In the end, this dissertation points out what should be improved about the knowledge representation approach and the main facets of the future work.
