With the rapid development of information technology, database system applications have been rapidly evolved from traditional data processing to spatial and temporal information processing, multimedia information processing, information library of office, scientific and application-oriented database as well as database applications based on the Internet. Along with increased information quantity and complexity, a management system based on the database technology couldn't satisfy society requirements. In the 1970s, the decision support system (DSS) comes forth. Now, the DSS has improved greatly. It is developed from the MIS. The DSS can provide advanced query and analysis. It is capable of secondary support and solving the half-structured and non-structured problem.Shortly after the emergence of Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP), computer technology come to an era of grid computing, Internet/Intranet, the internationalization of manufacturing trends and promotion of manufacturing information technology. As to the enterprise's advanced manager, when he is making his macro-decision, it's a hard work to catch the right data immediately from the system of ERP, which are huge, integrity and unsystematic. In the medium of 90s, with the appearance of Data Warehouse (DW) and On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP), the new software of ERP integrates the new techniques immediately and provides analytical tool for enterprise macro-decision for their users.Data Warehouse is a new technology in the field of information. Using the Data Warehouse, we can make use of the abundant data resources in an enterprise, exploring out valuable knowledge and rules to support decision-making. It can also combine experiences of veterans, who make the decisions, and the enterprise data to enhance enterprise competition ability.After analyzing the ERP system, technologies of data warehouse and DSS tools have been used to improve it. We use MS SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services to build a data warehouse with a theme of sales, based on the theory and implementtechnology of the data warehouse. Using the data transformation services (DTS), we can input and output data and schedules automatically. At the process of data transfer we can identify, wash, and transform the data. Based on analysis and discussion of the MDX (Multidimensional Expressions) query technology and OLAP dimensional analysis approach, we can make decisions and analysis to the data in the data warehouse. Finally, we can build a data-driven DSS and show our results using the PivotTable Services of the On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) application tools.This thesis focuses on the technology of data warehouse and its application in ERP. Firstly the basic concepts of warehouse are discussed, then methods of building a data warehouse are given, the model-building methods, steps and process are described, and the client interface design of a data warehouse is discussed in detail. Necessity and values of the data warehouse in ERP are emphasized, and at the same time some suggestions of data warehouse applications in ERP are proposed. At the final part of the thesis the analysis of multidimensional cube, which is established on the subject domain of sales, is applied to the Data Warehouse in ERP through the tools of OLAP and the MDX language. A demo of the DSS is established based on ERP.
