The digital image surveillance system based on still picture compression ishighly demanded in such field as bank or Automatic Teller Machine where security isstressed, for each frame can be decompressed independently. Both JPEG andJPEG2000 are still picture compression standard. JPEG2000 utilizes DWT which hassuperior analyzing performance in Time Domain and Frequency Domain to correctthe defect of DCT adopted by JPEG such as Blocking Effect.Based on the JPEG2000 encoder THUJ2K01 which is designed by my lab, ademo system mainly for testing it was setup. The demo system can downloadstandard gray images to the demo PCB and is compressed by THUJ2K01. When thecompression of one image finishes, the generated code stream is uploaded to PC to bedisplayed. Based on the successful operation of the encoder, a prototype system ofimage surveillance is established which can compress the acquired color image inadditin to standard gray image. In order to facilitate the founding of the prototypesystem, the extendibility of all function modules is considered to the fullest extent inthe demo system.The FPGA chip XC2VP7 6C FF672 is adopted in the demo system andXC3S1000 -4 FT256 in the prototype system;they all have about one millionequivalent gates. The demo system downloads the 512×512×8 Bits image to thedemo PCB and returns the code up to PC, all via USB bus, if the encoder can work asexpected. In addition to compressing standard gray images, the prototype system addsimage acquisition module so it ican also process the acquired 1024×1024×24 Bitscolor images. High volume SDRAMs are used to store frames. The process ofcompressing and coding operates in ping-pong mode, while SDRAM A is used forstoring images, SDRAM B is just for coding, and B turns to store images and A toacquire images only when both storing and coding finish.The software utilized by both systems is also inquired including MCU programand PC controlling program.The demo system can compress 12 1024×1024×24 bits color images persecond when operates at 50 MHz, and the generated codes are in accord withISO/IEC 15444-1. Experience is gained for building a high resolution digital imagesurveillance system based on Local Aera Network through the successful design ofthe prototype system.
