With the development of space remote sensing technology, the spectral and spatial resolution of remote sensing image has increased rapidly, the huge number of image data has brought a lot of difficulties to transmission and storage tasks, therefore, compressing image effectively becomes more and more urgent. The JPEG2000algorithm compress the image using discrete wavelet transform and adaptive arithmetic coding, which lead to far better quality than traditional algorithms such as JPEG in coding efficiency and recovery image. Duo to the high degree of complexity of the algorithm, how to design a compression system with simple structure, high quality as well as high speed has become a research focus. In this paper, we focus on the design and implementation of space camera compression unit for remote sensing image. Firstly, we study the basic theory of the JPEG2000encoder, followed by analysis of the characteristics of remote sensing image aiming to propose a lossless compression method based on prediction and JPEG2000, and then we carry out the software verification of the method. Finally, FPGAs and an ASIC chip XDYX-1are adopted to design and complete the compression unit and its validation. The results of the experiment show that the paper design image compression system is feasible, the original image data can be compressed into code stream of jp2 format. At the compression ratio of8, PSNR between compressed image and original ones can be36db, and the subjective visual and objective evaluation of the reconstructed image both performed well.
