In recent years, Mobile services and Internet services have undergone substantialgrowth. They are posing increasingly profound impacts on the ways that peopleconduct their work, study and everyday life. Mobile data service, a new cross set ofservices that combine both Mobile and Internet concepts, is also start to surface.Various solutions have been put together in order to provide such services. GPRSnetwork of China Mobile, for example, is one of these solutions that meet theever-increasing demand for mobile data services from its customer. At the same time,it also serves as a transitional platform for the migration from 2G to 3G mobilenetworks, providing valuable experience for future upgrade. The subject of the paper is a special terminal based, customer-oriented, M2M(machine-to-machine) Data Transmission Service that is built upon the GSM/GPRSnetwork of Tianjin Mobile with GPRS technology. By using peer-to-peer ormulticasting transmission, this service enables the communication among end-pointsas well as between end-points and central office. It can be used to provide suchfunctions as bi-directional information transmission, pair-wise data backup,tele-control and tele-monitoring. With great potential in industrial monitoring,tele-control, group coordination, MRP and wireless POS, this service is a perfectreal-time wireless data transmission solution for various industries including waterconservancy, electric power, petroleum, environmental protection, public security andfinance. The author has been engaged in wireless communication networkimplementation and project management since 1999. While specialized in wirelessdata transmission projects for special industries using GPRS in recent 2 years, he hasgone through almost every step within the project life-cycle: starting from feasibilitystudy, engineering design, project bidding, network implementation and optimization,to problem analysis and trouble shooting. Tianjin Power Utilities City Night-SceneIllumination System, the first large-scale GPRS industrial application project byTianjin Mobile, was carried out successfully with the author active involvement. Healso played a leading role in multiple industrial GPRS application projects for TianjinMobile, with special focus in the public utilities industry. During this period of time, the author did further study in GPRS-network based data transmission and otherrelevant technologies, and was able to apply his study to solve problems encounteredin his projects.Opinions and suggestions from experts will be deeply appreciated bythe writer.
