Wireless real-time data acquisition is widely demanded and applied in areas of military affairs, industry, scientific research, etc. It mainly works like this: data from diverse geographic locationsare transmitted to the control center by wireless means in real time; meanwhile, remote devices orinstruments can be also controlled and operated. With regard to the traditional remote datatransmission, both wire and wireless modes have their merits and demerits. As to the wire mode, too many costs of erection and wiring on various landforms outweigh the merits of being speedy, stable, and reliable, which is, therefore, not suitable for complex environments. As to the wirelessone, high charge for communications outweigh the merits of wide-range satellite communicationsfree of most environmental impacts, which is, therefore, not suitable for use and promotion to vastacreages. On the other hand, the data transmission mode of traditional GSM (Global System forMobile Communication) remains with the second generation mobile communication technology.Although GSM is qualified for data transmission, it is of limited transmissibility (300bps to9.6kbps), large network delay-time, low channel availability, and high costs of implementingreal-time data transmissions.Aiming against demerits of conventional modes mentioned above, China Mobile have broughtforward the data service of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) based on the 2.5th generationmobile communication technology. It adopts a packet-based manner, which tries to transmit datapackets to destinations. By applying high speed packet data technique, the availability oftransmission channels is greatly increased. The GPRS increases wireless data transmissibility fromcurrent 9600 bps to 112000 bps. As a kind of novel wireless communication technology, it iscurrently applied to commercial purposes such as the wireless internet surfing. In the paper, functions and applications of GPRS wireless data terminal are firstly introduced. And then, DSP (Digital Signal Processor) and embedded operating systemμC/OS-Ⅱareelaborated and studied. Hardware design and software realizaion of GPRS terminal are presentedafterward, and finally, the integral system is tested. As for the hardware design, it mainly consistsof chip selection of the microprocessor, interface design of M23 communication module, designs ofmemory units and parallel port circuit, etc. As for software realization, it mainly consists oftransplantingμC/OS-Ⅱin TMS320F2812, the partition of system tasks, and the concreteimplementation of all the functional modules. The software scheme can be described as: embedded operating system plus application program; the application program is developed on the basis ofμC/OS-Ⅱ. Partitioning the application program into multple tasks has simplified its softwaredesign, and has improved system reliability. The GPRS wireless data transmission implemented in the project has embedded TCP/IP(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), which enables the connection with the internetvia GPRS network. Data transmission by this way is highly real-time and supplies transparentchannels to users. It has been widely applied in fields of electric power automation, environmentprotection, traffic supervision and monitoring, etc., especially in mobile settings, difficult-to-wiresites, and backcountry districts.
