Power Line Carrier Sensor Networks (PLCSN) is a new network integrated with power line network and sensor network. In PLCSN, power line is used as data transmission medium. Because a variety of complex power loads connect to the power line, irregular impedance changes occur when these loads randomly access or disconnect to (plug and play) the power line. Worse, these changes will trigger dynamic turbulences of the network topology. Therefore, how to transmit data stably and reliably on time-variant and complex power line has become a spotlight in the academia of PLCSN.Routing algorithm development is a critical part for addressing this issue; however, no rational and effective routing algorithm can be obtained from previous work on PLCSN. For this reason, a novel protocol—Improved Dynamic Source Routing (IDSR) is proposed,allowing for the similarities such as the number of nodes, node organizations, topological structure and network bandwidth between Ad hoc network and PLCSN.IDSR is superior to DSR (1) a dynamic probability of flooding mechanisms based on the number of neighbor nodes is adopted in searching for a routing, which will reduce the overhead of the network compared to the full flooding; (2)the route maintenance scheme is raised. In the route discover stage, the nodes which have forwarded the route request would be classified into many virtue clusters with unique ID by the sequence of the forwarding. Once the route is broken, the node in the disconnection will broadcast a route maintenance packet with its cluster ID in it. All the nodes in the same cluster and the pre or after cluster, which receives the packet, will search their route cache about the broken link. If a backup route is found, it will be sent to the node in the disconnection. Thus, the broken route is repaired. This route maintenance mechanism try all the best to repair the broken route by taking advantage of the route cache in its neighbors, which reduce the times of route discover after route broken and improve the network's packet delivery rate.Communication simulation of IDSR is conducted via Matlab. The results show that IDSR reveals higher packet delivery ratio under different network circumstance compared to regular DSR. Therefore, IDSR is better than DSR in PLCSN.
