WSN(Wireless Sensor Network) is one of the most promising technologies ofthe 21st century. A WSN is a data focused network consisting of quantities of nodes, which are integrated with micro-sensors and micro-processors and short rangedradios. These nodes are also called motes sometimes. WSN has drawn the interests ofmany researchers for the sake of its broad application domains and special challenges.A routing protocol is a key factor of any kinds of networks, including WSN, ofcourse. The performance of the routing protocol could dominate the whole network. There are great challenges on designing of routing protocols for WSN, due to thespecial features WSN has. The routing protocol for WSN must be energy-efficient,extensible, robust, and must support data aggression in the protocol itself. This thesis addressed the design and implementation of a routing protocol forWSN using a cluster-tree topologic. I first give a deep analysis on the wireless sensornetwork itself and on its routing protocols. Among many protocols, the ones based oncluster-trees has obvious advantages over the flat ones, so I would use the cluster-treemechanism. Then a routing protocol based on cluster-tree which is focused on thepracticability is designed. It is called Multi-Layered Distributed Cluster-tree Routingprotocol, or MLDCR. It is implemented on the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC layer usingTexas Instruments'TIMAC development kit. To verify the design a mote based onTI's CC2530 is developed. Finally the software and hardware are tested showing thatthe implementation just achieves the goals that I firstly planned.
