In WSN,the tiny nodes, which consist of sensing, data processing and wireless communication components, are deployed densely and randomly in large numbers. The tiny nodes form the WSN in a self-organization manner.Compared with traditional wireless networks, the size (bulk, volume) of nodes in WSN is small, and bandwidth, memory and energy are limited resources.Otherwise, battery can not be recharged,as a result, conservation of energy consumption and prolonging of network lifetime are the vital of design WSN.Communication protocol stack should take full advantage of limited battery for prolonging network lifetime. So far it is believed that clustering is an effective way to perform energy management and extend the network lifetime. In this paper we discussed, from the point of view of clustering, about WSNs ,and we tried to conclude the pros and cons of this kind of algorithms.Based on these pros and cons,we proposed an improved clustering routing protocol—Location-aided Clustering Routing Protocol, which aimed at solving cluster head selection and cluster forming overhead and the problem of hot spot nodes close to base station. The improved protocol is designed to operate on probabilistic energy-aware routing protocols, and utilized an adaptive multi-level clustering and inter-communication in order to ensure network connectivity and load-balanced.The nodes in the route that selected ones based on energy aware-routing protocol formed clusters automatically.Supposed that we obtained location information on nodes through the localization mechanism, and according to the information,we scheduled the global transmission. The clustering routing protocol that not only achieved powerful and efficient data gathering and communication in intra-cluster and inter-cluster, but also extended hot spot nodes lifetime close to BS,thus prolonged network lifetime. Finally,we simulated the protocol by using Truetime toolbox. The results of simulation demonstrated that Location-aided Clustering Routing Protocol significantly minimizes energy consumption of nodes and extends network lifetime, compared with LEACH and EEUC.
