MEMS systems are more and more popular nowadays, and they made it possible that more intelligent sensors are produced, and this made wireless sensor networks get more and more attention. Compared to traditional sensors, these kinds of sensors have limited computational and processing ability, and they are much smaller and cheaper. These sensors can measure, test and get information from the environment and process it and then pass it to users. Wireless Sensor Networks is a new generation of sensor networks, which has a very broad range of applications, and its development and application will bring about far-reaching effects in all areas of human beings' activities. This paper analysized clustering-based routing protocols of wireless sensor networks to come up with a new and improved clustering-based routing protocol. In this paper, the main content is the following:We introduced the concept, development, key technologies, applications, classification and prospects of Wireless Sensor Networks. Then we talked about the protocol stack and all kinds of routing protocols of Wireless Sensor Networks. This paper mainly studied clustering-based routing protocols on several key technology in order to come up with improved methods. An improved clustering-based algorithm I-LEACH is proposed based on the analysis of LEACH. First, we take the energy problem into consideration and improved the computation of T(n). Secondly, we used a new protocol for the clustering heads to rout information to sink node. Finally, we tried a new way to avoid "Hot Area" problem to optimize the load of each cluster. The simulation results from OPNET showed that the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, aka. I-LEACH on improving the life time of the network to LEACH.
