Compared to traditional PC ETC systems, embedded ETC system has advantages on real-time performance, stability, power consumption and expansibility. How to achieve ETC charging feature porting from PC machines to embedded computers successfully under the premise of guaranteeing the safety and reliability of highway toll is an engineering technical difficulties.This paper proposed an embedded ETC system which used a embedded integrated machine as the core, based on analyzing the development status of ETC technology domestic and international. It made a deep research on key technologies, such as system software and hardware, charging process, toll data encryption algorithm and so on. The main research works are as follows:(1) An ETC system which combined MTC systems was designed. It allowed vehicles to enter into or exit the highway from either ETC or MTC.(2) The ETC system hardware based on the embedded integrated machine was designed. The embedded integrated machine constructed with the DM6446 and GM8180 chips, and had independent business processing and video monitoring. The communication protocols for the embedded integrated machine, RSU, the toll information display screen and double color dot-matrix LED were implemented.(3) The embedded ETC system software was designed. It implemented the features such as ETC toll processing, video monitoring, transaction information display, data transmission and storage, and the remote maintenance functionality based on CGI mode, which uses Linux and QT as the development tool.(4) A toll data encryption algorithm based on TDES was designed and implemented. It encrypted the toll data which were transmitted between the embedded integrated machine, RSU, OBU and IC cards, as to ensure the toll data security and reliability.(5) The hardware and software of the ETC system were tested, and some technical problems that occured during the test were solved. It mainly included the detection and solution of the following cars problem, as well as the improvement of the system real time.The test results of Nanning, Liuzhou, Beihai stations reveal the stability, reliability, convenience and safe data transmission of the system, showing that it meets the requirements of ETC systems, and greatly improves the efficiency of highway toll stations.
