At present, the deployment of 3G networks continues to move up in full swing all around the world. One of the main benefits of 3G is the higher data speeds which allow for simultaneous voice and high-speed data. Data uses include, email, video, music, etc.WCDMA is the most important standard of the third generation mobile systems, which is widely adopted by most of the commercial networks in the world, and has the most 3G customers.WCDMA R99 version can provide 384kbps data rate, the rate for most of the existing basic grouping business purposes. However, for many of the delays for traffic and data services such as video, streaming and download, and so on, require higher transmission rate and a shorter delay. HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) is a packet-based data service in WCDMA downlink. HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) is a packet-based data service in WCDMA uplink. HSPA Networks offer both HSDPA downlink and HSUPA uplink speeds combined. It significantly improves the system throughput, increases the system capacity, reduces the delay of the system compared to R99 system and also can support higher per user data rates (theoretically up to 14.4 Mbps in the downlink and 5.76 Mbps in the uplink). In January 2009, China issued third generation wireless communication licenses to the 3 biggest telecomunication providers. China Unicom received the 3G license based on WCDMA. China Unicom has already begun deployment of WCDMA infrastructure all over the country, and has directly deployed HSPA network in some cities. So the study of WCDMA and HSPA network planning has great realistic significance.Coverage planning and capacity planning are important parts of WCDMA radio network planning. This dissertation focuses on coverage planning and capacity planning of WCDMA radio network planning. It also researches on the relative network dimensioning of the planning. In this paper, the main technical influence factors of HSPA ale presented and then the impact of HSPA implementation on WCDMA cell coverage and capacity is analyzed.Theoretical analysis, simulation and test case study, deployment case study, are used in the discussions and pecific strategies are recommended for each issue to solve the key problems in practice. With practical example of HSPA network dimensining, it expounds the dimensioning process and ideas. Finally HSPA deployment strategy is discussed and presented. This thesis will certainly be of substantial value and make beneficial reference for WCDMA/HSPA radio network planning and construction.
