Based on the basic principle of WCDMA, this paper gives introduction of the radio resource management algorithms for wireless network performance and the impact of network planning. Then, with the city WCDMA network planning practice, through the WCDMA network coverage, capacity and quality analysis, this paper described the interaction between coverage, capacity and quality.On this basis, the article analyzes some elements of the WCDMA network planning, Initial WCDMA network planning and the detailed planning process; though static Simulation and link budget, this paper gives a further description of the process, the output of the simulation results; Based on the simulation results, this paper gives some method to optimize the BS number and quality of the network. At the end of this paper, HSDPA is introduced: based on the basic technology of HSDPA, this paper analyzes the impact of HSDPA implement to of R99/R4 Network. Though analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of HSDPA to R99/R4, this paper finally gives some advice to the HSDPA network planning.This thesis consists of the following five sections.Firstly, the paper reviews the development of cellular mobile communication systems. By analyzing the development of global 3G network and mobile communications in China, the paper points out the necessity of WCDMA network in China.The second part gives out algorithms of the WCDMA radio resource management and introduces its impact to network performance and network planning .Meanwhile, compared to the GSM network planning, the similarities and differences between WCDMA and GSM network planning and requirements of WCDMA and GSM using the same base station are explained. On this basis, the paper shows the necessity of planning for WCDMA networks. Thirdly, according to the characteristics of WCDMA networks interference, we can theoretically find the downlink and uplink relationship of interference and capacity, relationship of throughput and coverage. Moreover, using MATLAB, this paper also gives the map of relationship of capacity, coverage and interference.Based on the above parts, the fourth part gives detailed introduction to some concepts of the WCDMA network planning. It also introduces the initial planning of WCDMA wireless network planning and the basic processes of the detailed planning. Taking a practice of a city WCDMA network planning for example, further explanation of the above process is given. Using AIRCOM static simulation tool, it gives the network performance, and the output of the simulation results. Based on network simulation results, optimizing methods of quantity and quality of network base stations is also given.Finally, the influence of HSDPA to WCDMA RNP is discussed. High speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) is joined into the WCDMA system in release 5. The downlink capacity is increased evidently by using HSDPA, but the capacity and coverage of WCDMA release 99(R99/R4) network are influenced. The method how to embed HSDPA planning into the R99 network planning process is introduced in the final chapter.
