The telecommunication market has been developing very fast in recent years, especially the mobile communication market. It is estimated that the 3G license, having been expected for years, will be issued early next year. WCDMA(Wideband CDMA) is widely considered to be an overwhelming RTT(Radio Transmission Technique) technology in the 3G market. It adopts the CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) technology instead of TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access), which is the fundamental technique of GSM network. As a result, the radio network planning of WCDMA is quite different from that of GSM, with much more complicated planning principle and methods.The thesis is based on a practical WCDMA radio network planning project. It focuses on the area encircled by the second ring road of Chengdu city. The planning of WCDMA radio network should follow many steps, under the guidance of a planning method. The thesis introduces the basic planning principles in detail, describes the goal, and makes the radio network model. To make this planning closer to a real planning project, the more accurate network and traffic models are built and used. The focused area is considered to be a dense urban environment, with a complex radio propagation model and different types of services. The simulation results, made out by the AICOM ENTERPRISE 3G tool, are analyzed in detail, which illustrate that the network performances meet perfectly with our goal. The planning of WCDMA radio network could be a satisfactory one.The principle and method of establishing UTRAN performance KPI system are also presented in the thesis based on the UTRAN's technologic character. A set of UTRAN performance KPI is also presented based on the principle, method and GSM/GPRS wireless network performance KPI. The status of UTRAN can be reflected by those KPIs.The conclusions and methods in this thesis could be beneficial to the currentWCDMA network construction and KPI research practice.
