Video surveillance is an important component of the security system, and it is widely used in different walks of life. With the development of embedded technology, streaming media technology and network technology, video surveillance system is progressively moving toward the front-end integration, digital, network-oriented direction. While modern video surveillance system looks for high-definition screen and real-time monitoring and requires a growing data storage, the internet becomes a bottleneck with very limited bandwidth in the way. H.264 standard is a revolutionary video codec protocols developed by the IEO/IEC and ITU-T, its highly efficient codec efficiency and excellent network compatibility helps alleviate the bandwidth requirements of video bit rate, however, the complexity has increased considerably. Due to the limited software and hardware resource and complexity of encoding and decoding of embedded system, using the hardware codec IP core for video encoding and decoding will better enhance the performance of the embedded video monitoring system. Moreover, the choice of hardware codec IP core implementation of H.264 standard codec can greatly improve the performance of video surveillance systems.In this paper, the S3C6410 ARM11 chip is selected/proposed to be the hardware platform and Linux operating system as software platform for embedded video monitoring system. Firstly based on H.264 standard, a compression of video collected via USB camera has been conducted with the use of an internal encoding MFC model. Then the video is streamed through the real-time streaming transport protocol RTP/RTCP. Through the ported Web server and SDL, a local preview is accomplished; In addition, system allows remote monitoring of client Web browser, directly through the monitor screen display, also the specially designed video surveillance software can be used to receive a real-time video stream, monitor the screen display, store and query.
