With more and more widely Internet is applied, it has got great improvement in performance. People hope to enjoy higher quality Internet services. It is more and more important to research on the performance measurement of Internet. So, we develop a IP network tester which can be applied to monitor the network status and locate the position of network fault efficiently.In this dissertation, a network performance tester prototype is designed and implemented with Intel Xscale microprocessor and embedded Linux operating system technologies. Firstly, the concepts of network measurement and the performance metrics are introduced; Secondly, the design of the IP Network Tester is described in detail. the method to build IP Network Tester software platform and hardware platform is given. Thirdly, the measurement of end-to-end delay is analyzed, and different measurement methods are given. The method which used in this dissertation is discussed in detail. Fourthly, the end-to-end delay module of the network tester is designed and implemented. Then the end-to-end delay of various paths in Internet is measured with this tester. Finally, the whole paper is summarized and some problems that worth considering are pointed out.
