Recently, with stepping into the era of the network progressively, people tend to depend on the information network more and more. The network measurement is the basic means to guarantee high performance, high dependability and high usability of network. As an important tool of network measurement, network tester is gaining people's concern day by day. This paper is supported by Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC, No. 60132030) titled with "Study of topology discovery and performance analysis of IP network based on network detection". Firstly, the design scheme of the portable network tester is given. The tester is implemented by modular design which consists of network scanning module, tester configuration module, available bandwidth measurement module, network traffic generator module, protocol analysis module, packet loss rate measurement module, network topology discovery module, and network route information search module. The framework of the tester is also presented in the end. Secondly, the design and implementation of network scanner function is described in detail which is based on the study of network scanning and adopts the multiple-threads techniques. Thirdly, by analyzing the concept of network traffic and the two types of traffic generation methods, the network traffic generator module is implemented based on the Libnet. Fourthly, in the tester the available bandwidth of an end-to-end path is measured by PathChirp method. Fifthly, a software module is designed to measure the packet loss rate in this tester. Finally, some ideas and suggestions are brought forward for the further work to overcome the limitation of existing system.
