It is a trend to get high resolution digital images directly using a camera with the development of digitization and IC techniques. Aerial Digital Camera(ADC) can store and transfer images with digital form and communicate with earth stations in real time, which overcomes the shortcoming of optical camera in its time-consuming and fussy image generation. Such a camera can rapidly capture high resolution digital images so that it has found wide applications in many aspects such as space. aviation and military affairs.Focus on the problem of large data storage, this thesis investigate the image compression technique based on hardware. It mainly involves system analysis, structure design and implementation of image compression subsystem of the Aerial Digital Camera based on hardware. The JPEG algorithm is firstly presented. Then the JPEG algorithm is simulated by C code and the performance of the algorithm is analyzed. Furthermore, we implemente the algorithm on a DSP. The thesis describes the development and debugging of the software and hardware, as well as some testing results based on DSP and FPGA. In the end, it discusses some problems related to the software programming and hardware designing, and gives corresponding solution.The developed product can be not only applied to the case of Aerial Digital Camera, but also to other high resolution image collection equipment. It has practical significance in developing high resolution minitype digital cameras.
