| Modern distance education is new type of education appeared with the modern information technology. People can study in anytime and anywhere by the distance education because it breaks the time and space restriction of traditional education. Distance education not only realizes the sharing of learning resource but also becomes a important way to extend the education scales and prevalence civil education. The one core of modern distance education is the making of courseware. Now there are many courseware making tools, such as PowerPoint,Authorware,FrontPage,Dreamweaver,Flash and ect. Although these tools have many virtues, the courseware made by them have such defects: be lack of the supporting of distance education interrelated criterion; many teaching department can't sharing the resources; the multimedia information can't be synchronization exactly, especially they can't be play with narrow bandwidth; be difficult in the updating of courseware. So, there is eager to a more excellent courseware making system that can overcome these lacks. Streaming media technology just appears to solute the question that multimedia transport on narrowband. Streaming media has the advantage of playing with transporting and small size, so it can be stored easily and has normal playing effect in diversified network transport cases. Especially when the playing time is long, the superiority is embodied satisfying. So the courseware made with the system has preferable playing effect on network through applying streaming media in this courseware making system. XML has 4 characters of Well Storage format, extensibility, well formed structure and be fit for transport on network, so it becomes new Web language. In recent year, XML is applied in E-commerce, distance education and so on. SMIL is the criteria put forward by W3C and it is the applying of XML. SMIL has the advantages of realizing the concurrency and the precise positioning of multimedia, editing easily, supporting the hyperlink, and economizing network bandwidth. The paper will build a Streaming media courseware making system base on the research of XML, Streaming media, SMIL and some key problem. The content of the research are: 1. Realization the courseware resources criterion using XML. Realize the criterion of courseware resources according to IMS\CELTS using XML. This gives a guarantee for the exchanging, saving and searching for courseware resources. 2. The integration of binary file and XML. It avoids the problem of the reducing of structural degree because of the separation transport of binary file and XML and the file confusion and data losing because of the separated of the binary files and XML. 3. The data exchange interface between XML and web Database. XML can exchange data with Datebase by use of the interface efficiently and limpidity 4. Design and realize the making tools of courseware media. The system provides the three types of files making tools. Among of them, the outline files are made up of by the system automatically. So it will reduce the work burden of users and enhance the degree of the automatization. 5. Show the couserware structure like trees. Presenting the courseware structure like trees when users assemble courseware. So users can asseble courseware more clearly. 6. Making the Streaming media outline files automatically. 7. Realize the orientation and playing exactly of multi media using Streaming media technology and SMIL. The stream media courseware making system has these advantages: advanced the making efficiency; reduced the cost of making courseware; making for the sharing of courseware resources; protected the knowledge property right; and the general teacher can making web courseware easily that be accord to the criterion and the effect of playing is very excellent, furthermore, just updating courseware material when update courseware is enough, not amending the courseware itself at all.
