With the development of network technology and the continuous improvement of network bandwidth, streaming media comes into our life from the lab.Videos are intuitive and informative, give people real feelings, and are inclined to be accepted.Movie trailers,as well as Flashes and high-definition videos, never stop people's desire of clicking the mouse. Behind these rich contents, the forming cost and technical content of streaming media system become the industry threshold.Especially in video-on-demand(VOD) field,a significant market share has been occupied by two companies,RealNetworks and Microsoft. However,in recent years, open source community keeps active that a lot of softwares were born, which bring new hope to the streaming media industry.Around the open-source Darwin Streaming Server and the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 standard, considered campus network condition, and made full use of open source softwares,a VOD system under Linux was designed and implemented. The system consists of streaming media server,Rapid Media Import System (RMIS) and Web publishing platform. The system adopted RAID in hardware to improve the maximum number of concurrent streams and data security, implemented interactive multi-language overdubs and subtitles to simulate DVD menu effect by SMIL in software.A mature open-source CMS (Content Management System) software also was used to achieve the Web publishing platform. For the quite time-consuming process of programs production,RMIS was designed and implemented to import AVI and subtitle files swiftly by reducing the re-encoding process as much as possible. It can be seen that, using existing technology and accumulation, through secondary development,it is the same to achieve business requirements and fulfill various user-flow aspects.Practical deployment shows that, compared with commercial software, the system costs low, takes less time of program production, organizes contents more flexibly and has more interactivity. It is able to provide great audio-visual effects as well as good performance and data security, therefore is suitable for use in the campus network.Particularly, aimed at the hotspot of production process—second time encoding of source files which consumed most time,RMIS optimizes it and shortens the course by more than 10 times. It also makes things easier to utilize audio/video resources on the network. The system in line with MPEG-4 standard even facilitates platform expansion and encoding format upgrading for the future. At the same time, the Web interface with friendly appearance, rich features and easy management saves a lot of time and manpower of designing. In summation, the implementation of the system makes beneficial exploration and attempt on building a streaming media system facing next-generation standard under campus network environment.
