Firstly, the paper analyses the development trend of construction machinery and the development requirement of construction machinery monitoring system. Aiming at the development actualities and problems of domestic and overseas's constructibfl-machinery monitoring systems, the paper brings the three-layer model of construction machinery monitoring system: unit control system, machine-used forepart monitoring system and long-distance monitoring system. At the same time the paper analyses and prove the advantage of the scheme in construction machinery monitoring. Aiming at the particularity and complexity of machine-used forepart monitoring system in the construction machinery monitoring system, the paper adopts embedded development platform of ARM plus Linux, deeply researches the transplant of embedded Linux operating system in ARM microprocessor, and make preparations for the detailed design and realization of machine-used forepart monitoring system. Because there are not CAN controller in ARM microprocessor and CAN bus driver in Linux kernel, the paper researches the programming of Linux device driver and some key problems, especially how to deal with I/O ports, memories, interrupts, and clocks. Finally, based on the research results the paper successfully designs a construction machinery machine-used forepart monitoring system based on ARM and Linux. The system's CPU is AT91RM9200 produced by Atmel company which is embedded in ARM-Linux operating system. The system is connected with other subsystems by CAN bus and communicates with long-distance monitoring center by GPRS module and GSM/GPRS net and Internet. So the system can accomplish data collection, native and long-distance control, image collection and wireless transmission and make preparations for the local and long-distance momtoring.At present, the system has been experimented with other subsystems and long-distance monitoring center in the laboratory. The result testified that the system has high reliability, rapid communications, friendly man-machine conversation interface, convenient debugging and maintenance etc. The communications speed can achieve the requirement of applications. This also indicates the validity and application value of the research result.
