Grid is a complicated system involving large-scale distributed heterogeneous resources on the Internet. The aim of the Grid computing is to realize transparent resource sharing and cooperation in the wide area network. In the Grid environment, the monitoring and the analysis of the status of system resources, network and the application affect the performance of the system. So a Grid Resources Monitoring System (GRMS) is needed. The GRMS can know the status of system resources, detect faults in time, find out the bottleneck of the system, and provide reliable basis for system resource scheduling or performance optimization. So the research of Grid Monitoring is very valuable.The paper analyzes the characteristic and problem of Grid Monitoring System, summarizes some basic concepts and principles, and introduces grid monitoring architecture (GMA) proposed by Global Grid Form(GGF). Several Grid Monitoring System based on GMA are discussed and compared. These technologies, such as resource organization and management, resource express, uniform resource information model building, monitoring and updating of the information of resource status, the validity and optimum of distributed storage, are discussed in detail.Based on the above analysis and research, this paper focuses on our own design and implementation of the Grid resource monitoring system--GridEye. GridEye is based on GMA. The GridEye system adopts distributed framework that can monitor and control heterogeneous resources distributed in the wide area network, provides information to high-level application. The system can divide into local monitoring layer and global monitoring layer logically. The local monitoring is responsible for resource monitoring of a single site or a domain and storing the resource information, while the global monitoring is responsible for the monitoring and management of the local monitoring and also storing the resource statistical information. The implementation of the GridEye system is service-oriented and modular, so it is flexible, manageable, scalable, high available and so on. And this paper also introduces the security of monitoring services in Grid, resource information archives, the join and the access interface of low-level monitoring resources. This system has already been deployed and is running in China Grid System Software, supporting information access for high-level application.
