Grid integrates high speed network, computers, large-scale databases, sensors and remote devices, composes a virtual massive-powered super computer, supplying many types of resources to be shared completely. University grid resolves the problem that a great of resources are idle while many tasks are not satisfied. To construct a university computing grid, the services of resource monitoring and discovery must be founded firstly which is the base. The service of resource monitoring supplies necessary information about resource for another middleware, which is the foundation of the resource discovery and resource distribution. The service of resource discovery constructs a bridge between the idle or unknown resource and the users or tasks which request resource. Hence, the power of resources discovery will strongly and directly affect the degree of the grid usage efficiency and friendship.Based on the research of grid, the author takes most attention to research the theory of the resource monitoring and resource discovery and relational technology, especially the globus middleware, globus toolkit and grid service. This paper synthesized each strongpoint of existed systems, considered the character of the university grid environment, analyzed the role and position of the service of resource monitoring and discovery in the university computing grid, designed a model of the service in this grid--UCGridMDS and then implemented it. UCGridMDS includes resource information sensor, the grid service of resource monitoring and discovery, the resource information collector, and the grid portal of monitoring and discovery. Comparatively, UCGridMDS affects little the performance of the grid, the collector stores all the resource information in the center storage, including dynamic information and static information, reduces the load of the sensor correspondingly. The sensor subscribes the resource information to the collector, decreases the load of the network and the collector correspondingly, too. Finally, this paper tested the implementation of UCGridMDS, The implementation supports the grid resource monitoring and discovery, supplies a whole view of the resource information, real-time monitoring, information concentrative storage, the grid service of resource monitoring and discovery and the system control.
