This project stems from production line of optical module of Jiangsu Allray Inc. This thesis develops an automatic optical module testing system based on advanced virtual instrument technology in measurement & control domain, which solves the problem that the manual testing course would easily introduce human error and make the operation course complicated. On the whole, this system can be divided into two units— data acquisition and control unit and Man-Machine Interface unit. The goal of this system is to realize the automatic test of key parameters of optical module, in place of the manual testing course, which will reduce the test time, improve testing efficiency, make the complicated test course automatic and simple.The demand analysis of this project, development trend of photo-communication measurement technology, theoretical background , main content and meaning of this thesis is given in the first, then analysis and design of the system is discussed, hardware composition of the system is introduced and the whole software is divided into many function modules. Then the structure , characteristics and application of virtual instrument software architecture(VISA) is carefully discussed, how to use tool provided by Agilent IO Libraries to config VXI interface , GPIB interface and how to code instrument control program with Agilent VISA library functions is also discussed. Then is the main part of this thesis , where hardware design and software design is discussed in detail, the hardware design includes the current-acquiring circuit of optical module, warning signal -capturing circuit, optical switch driving circuit etc. and the software design includes Agilent 81250 Parallel Bit Error Ratio tester controlling algorithm, sensitivity measurement algorithm, warning signal-capturing algorithm, these algorithm are the difficult and important part of the system. In the course of the software development, Agilent VISA Library functions is used, which will make the program easy to be transplanted and reused.Then this thesis has tested the key parameters of twenty optical modules with the automatic testing system, and the system can automatically save the results in the designed database. Comparing to the manual testing results, the designing and research of this automatic optical module testing system has proved to be feasible, practical and superior.Finally, we have proposed that this thesis can be improved afterwards: we can add two 1 × 4 optical switch in this automatic testing system, then we can test four optical modules one time , which can largely improve testing efficiency.Through the designing and realizing of this automatic optical module testing system, it will greatly popularize the application of virtual instrument technology in the photo-communication measurement domain.
