Mobile Ad hoc Network is a special type of wireless telecommunication networks. It is better than UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) and Satellite Communication Network Systems in the aspects of the speediness of building network and contradicting destruction. When the special assignments are enforced, for example the cases of withstanding disasters and emergencies, MANET can quickly build up the network and provide distributed network especially in military affairs. In addition, during the telecommunications MANET can make the other nodes as relay stations in especial environments of the zones of mountains and hungriness where UMTS can not work on.Currently, MANET is based on TCP/IP hierarchy. The researches of routing protocol in the network layer are one hotspot. After the existing routing protocols(e.g.active routing protocols, passive routing protocols, hierarchy routing protocols) are compared and analyzed, a new composite routing protocol------SNRL, which is based on the merits of active and passive routing protocols, will be brought forward in this paper. The most important contents of SNRL have two sides, the first side is that every node in MANET will maintain routing lists of short-distance nodes in order that this node can quickly send packets according to the mechanism of active routing protocols when the need is coming. The second side is that every node in MANET will not maintain the routing lists of far-distance nodes. When there are packets which should be sent to those far-distance nodes, this node will run the mechanism of passive routing protocols. In this way, the new routing protocol can find the most balance and best point in the following capabilities, the speediness of routing constringency, the mean delay of packet, the mean routing hop of packets, system cost of routing spending. After the network simulation software-NS2 is made use of, the performances of SNRL will be simulated and tested in random networksimulation scenes. Then the results of output data can be analyzed. The results of analysis show that the new routing protocol will apply normal circumstances in MANET and have some improvements in some capabilities of MANET. Therefore, it can be concluded that SNRL is better than some existing active and passive routing protocols of MANET.The design aim is basically achieved so that it is made the foundations for the future research.
