The wireless ad hoc network is a multi-hop network without infrastructure.Nodes in the network act as both routers and hosts. When acting as a router,a routing protocol with good performance is very important. Therefore, designing a simple and efficient routing protocol so that it can quickly and accurately select the route to the destination node, this is one of the core problems that wireless ad hoc networks need to solve. This paper studies the performance of wireless ad hoc networks and routing protocols:Firstly, the characteristics and key technologies of wireless ad hoc networks are introduced in detail, and the operation mechanism and working characteristics of five typical routing protocols,AODV,OLSR,DSR,DSDV and BATMAN adv are analyzed. From the perspective of the topology scenario of the node pause time, the AODV,OLSR,DSR,and DSDV protocols with hop counts as routing metrics are simulated and compared. From the perspective of the topological scene of node moving speed, the simulation comparison between AODV and BATMAN adv protocol based on link quality as a routing metric is performed. It is proved that AODV has stronger adaptability than wireless ad hoc networks, but there are still defects in routing metrics. Then,in order to solve the problem of energy consumption exhaustion and high congestion caused by the singularity of AODV routing metric,a new multi-metric routing mechanism-M-AODV is proposed.Model M-AODV metrics: This paper proposes a new mechanism to measure the stability of the network link using the received signal strength, and compares the received signal strength with a set threshold of received signal strength to calculate the degree of routing stability as one of the measuring factors. This paper proposes a detection method that uses the ratio of the number of cached packets in the queue of a node to the queue length as a congestion metric to more accurately measure the congestion of the node. From the perspective of the remaining energy of the nodes,an energy-saving method for extending the network lifetime is proposed.By setting the energy threshold to avoid low-energy nodes as forwarding nodes, the energy and load of each node are well balanced.During the path selection process, the reliability of the route is calculated in consideration of the stability of the route, the degree of congestion and the number of hops according to the set path reliability function. The path with the highest reliability is selected as the optimal path for data transmission. Finally, the optimized routing protocol is verified, and the optimized protocol is added to the NS2 simulation platform and different network models are built on the simulation platform for performance testing. The results show that compared with AODV,M-AODV effectively reduces the network delay while ensuring the packet delivery rate of the network, reduces the network burden and improves the survival rate of nodes in the network.
