Based on the development of spatial technology, networking technology, database technology, and virtual reality (VR), combining with geographic information systems (GIS) and artificial intelligence (AT), the study of decision support systems (DSS) is advancing towards high interactivity and high level of integration. Recently, many attentions had been paid on the research of visual techniques of DSS, especially on computer aided mapping and 3D virtual flights.Ecocity Planning DSS (ECPDSS), integrated with spatial technology, networking technology and distribution technology, is an urgently requirement of China's ecocity planning projects. The application of visual techniques in ECPDSS could improve the decision supporting efficiency of ECPDSS, improve the display methods and comprehension of current conditions and optimized scenarios, improve the accuracy, efficiency, beauty and reusability of planning maps, and improve the system interactivity with the public.Based on the research of Hangzhou Ecocity Planning DSS (HZECP-DSS), application and integration of visual techniques in 3S based ECPDSS were studied. Supported by Arc/Info 8.1 and CorelDraw 11.0, the research of planning maps automatic generation was studied. The drawing of topographical shading, the usage of special effects as interactive transparency and the design of symbol systems were also discussed. Supported by Arc/Info 8.1 and ERDAS Imagine 8.6, Hangzhou 3D virtual flight show was generated based on 1:250,000 geographic data (2002) and the TM image (1999) of Hangzhou. The choice of data types, coordinate and projections, the overlay of other information and the implementation of Chinese annotation were discussed.Routine methods and application demands of application and integration of visual techniques of ECPDSS were analyzed, and goals of the application were proposed consequently. The design of HZECP-DSS was argued, and therecommended methods of application and integration of visual techniques were proposed.
