According to the Computer Crime & Security Survey (2002, Computer Security Institute, USA), data divulgence on hard disk due to laptop; and hard disk theft has already ranked the second information safety issue next to computer viruses. The basic security method for data confidentiality is encryption technique; however, the encryption packet with software not only degrades the performance of the system, but also is in itself insecure. Therefore, the research and development of data encryption system with hardware based on modem encryption technique is very important.Recently many foreign companies and institutes have been studying the hard disk data encryption, and developed some commercial products and encryption chipsets, but there is still backward in this field for the domestic research and development. In this dissertation we combine basic knowledge of modem cryptography with FPGA design technique to develop a direct-embedded hard disk data encryption card based on DBS (Data Encryption Standard) algorithm. The main research work of this dissertation is as follows:1. The research of hard disk working mechanism and ATA standard;2. The study of FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) design technique;3. The study of modern cryptography foundation;4. The research and development of a direct-embedded hard disk data encryption card;5. The discussion of Key management scheme.HLD (High-Level-Design) method and Bottom-Up de$ign method have been synthetically adopted during the development of the hard di$k data encryption card. We have described each FPGA sub-module by VHDL, designed the peripheral circuit and the whole encryption card by Protel. At last, the shortcoming of current research and further improvement are also discussed.
