SATA is one of the newest serial standard applied for the interface of hard disk. SATA has some advantages compared to PATA interface, which supporting hot plug and transmitting data in a high speed. SATA 2.0 is the second generation in SATA family. It uses LVDS NRZ code to transmit serial bit one by one so that the bus speed can reach up to 3Gb/s. Otherwise, SATA 2.0 has some unique technical features such as NCQ,PM and interleaving start-up. Because of the mentioned above, hard disk with SATA interface has been widely accepted by both enterprise class and individual class users.The information safety in hard disk is a very important issue. It is reasonable to choose the hardware encryption way to handle the real time massive data in and out of the hard disk. And also for the reason of providing additional safety, key method has been involved in the hard disk encryption. So, setting up a project including hard disk encryption and SATA interface has important value.This thesis firstly introduce the bus protocol of SATA 2.0 which include PHY layer, link layer, transmit layer and command layer, and explain the key problems in those layers. Secondly, it gives a detailed interpretation and analysis to ATA protocol, which is very useful in picking up the data frame to encrypt. Thirdly, this thesis provides an outline of the whole circuit system. It discusses how to build up the hardware circumstance, how to divide the modules according to the function and what is the principle of running system. Fourthly, this thesis elaborately shows the design of ever module in data path, and gives their validation consequences. At the last, there is a simple introduce of validation and testing.This SATA 2.0 hard disk encryption interface circuit has been tested in Virtex 5 XC5VLX50T FPGA of XILINX Corporation. The system works on a high performance and meets all requirements of the design.
