This thesis introduces the design of an ARM-based GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver. The process of developing firmware for this receiver is also mentioned. As it shows, ARM is a family of high performance RISC microprocessors, and the ARM-based GPS receiver is also a low-power, high-perfomance one, which has an open architecture for designing OEM products that may be utilized in the aerospace applications as well as some other commercial areas. This thesis describes first the feature of GPS, and then discusses the design principle of GPS receiver with a conclusion that the performance of CPU, i.e. the microprocessor in the receiver directly decides the whole performance of the receiver. Compared to others, ARM has some special features which make it stand out. The thesis introduces this and then discribes the design and implementation of an ARM-based GPS receiver. At the appendix of the thesis, some hot topics in related areas are mentioned. The prospect of implementing these new ideas and methodologies in designing GPS receiver is also discussed.
