Influenced by the steady progress of the policy of reform and opening, China's demand of specialized talents has been increasing enormously. Therefore the government is planning to further develop its vocational education. Yet as a result of the expansion of student recruitment, a large number of student underachievers in mathematics are found in the process of vocational education development. The issue of mathematics underachievement is crucial not only for the implementation of the principle of facing all students in quality education, but also for the compressive quality of the practical and technical talents demanded by our society. On the basis of this background, the present thesis attempts to study the causations and the transforming strategies of mathematics underachievement in vocational senior high schools through the case study of Longmenhao Vocational School. It consists of six chapters in all. Chapter I explains the purpose of the study.Chapter II introduces previous relevant studies at home and abroad as well as the theoretical foundations of this thesis.Chapter III describes the performance of mathematics underachievers in Longmenhao Vocational School and concludes their characteristics.Chapter IV analyses the causations of mathematics underachievement in vocational senior school in the aspects of students' personal condition, school education, families and society. The students' personal condition consists of intellectual factors and non-intellectual factors. Intellectual factors are considered to cover factors of cognition, thinking and mathematics capabilities, and non-intellectual factors are generally represented through the students' lack of interests, unawareness of targets, impediment of emotions, weakness of will, and incorrectness of methods in learning. The school education is analyzed through two layers: the layer of school environment policy and the teaching of teachers.Chapter V discusses the transformation of mathematics underachievers in vocational senior high school and proposes strategies in the aspects of students, teachers, families and society. Firstly, as for the students, it is important to optimize their cognitive structure, carry out trainings on mathematic thinking strategies, develop their interest and capabilities in mathematics learning, stimulate their initiative, keep their emotions stable, strengthen their will power, provide guidance in learning methodologies and so forth. Secondly, the teachers should bury it in mind that all the students could be excellent, help them to establish self-confidence through successful education, arouse their enthusiasm in mathematics learning through emotional communications, create positive class atmosphere through the implication of efficient teaching methods, teach the students with correct learning methods, and use textbook flexibly and optimize teaching strategies according to the needs of students, etc. Thirdly, it is necessary for the schools to change their...
