Most junior school students are12years old or so, which is a special period for the following reason:with little social experience,the low level of cognition and the poor judgement of telling right from wrong, their minds are susceptible to the outside influence. It is because of the characteristics of such a special age that a lot of marginal students inadvertently slipped into the underachievers’ group. Taking our Mingshan Junior Middle school for example, the phenomenon of underachievers exists in most classes. Despite the fact that the proportion of such students is relatively small,they have a great impact on the whole class and school. As teachers, it is our duty and responsibility to make education available to all students. Timely education and guidance on such students is the key to improving the teaching quality and making education satisfactory to the people, so it is of important theoretical and practical significance to dig into the cause of their formation and the strategies of the transformation of these students.My essay consists of four parts to give a full account of what have been mentioned above:The first part is an introduction,which presents the categories of underachievers, the main research results at home and abroad as well as some approaches used in investigating the underachievers.The second part is the theoretical basis for the research on the underachievers which explains how to transform them.The last two parts are the central section of the essay.The third part makes an assay of types and psychological characteristics of the underachievers and the four main causes of their formation based on the investigation results.The fourth part puts forward strategies for transforming underachievers on the basis of the third one.
