With the continuous development of China's economy and the deepening of reform and opening up policy,expanding international cooperation has become an inevitable trend of economic development,which not only provides us with unprecedented opportunities,but also the tough challenges.With the development of the political,economic and cultural exchanges,language communication has become particularly significant,which also sets a higher standard for foreign language talents in China.Against this background,it is very important to master the English language.However,due to the lack of communicative language environment and the poor language learning environment,there are lots of English under-achievers in senior high school.This phenomenon hinders the progress of students in their English Learning.In addition,students with learning difficulties also indirectly produce some social problems.Since the early 20 th century,researchers at home and abroad have explored the classification and causes of underachievers from different angles.In 1962,Samuel Kirk of the United States first proposed “Learning incompetence”.He pointed out that there would be problems for those students in other areas,such as reading and social interaction skills.In 1988,The National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities was established in the United States.In 1999,“Individuals with Disabilities Education Act” was published in the United States.Studies on underachiever students in Senior High School is far from enough.Therefore,it is necessary to investigate the types,causes of underachievers,the overall situation of underachiever students etc.Based on domestic and foreign research of the underachiever students,this thesis has an indepth analysis of the underachievers in the first grade of LinFen No.1 senior high school.Through questionnaire survey,classroom observation and interviews,this thesis has found out the causes of the English underachievers,their classroom performance.Finally,the author proposes some effective ways to transform them.Actually,students with English learning disabilities are only students who have learning difficulties in acquire English knowledge,we cannot call them backward students.The reason they have difficulties in English learning are not mental retardation,but mainly due to the chain scission of the old and new knowledge in the process of knowledge migration.And the external causes of underachiever students includes the school,the teachers and the family and so on.Different underachiever students may have different performance in class.The author will record their performance and analyze it in my research.
