Chinese measure word has been one of the difficulty of teaching Chinese to foreigners. From the present studies, the situation of foreign learners using measure word is not satisfactory. These learners often feel frustrated when they face a wide variety of Chinese measure words and the flexible usages. For the measure word teaching and learning, grammatical analysis, the traditional way of language teaching, often makes teachers felt difficult to start, also let learners find it difficult to learn by analogy.In this paper, an important aspect of the introductory section lies in the review of existing evidence of the measure word study, such as Pragmatic research and Chinese language research. Based on these resoure, the author decided to use the errors from learners as a research starting point to explore the fundamental reasons. In addition, from the teaching point of view, the "Outline of Chinese Vocabulary Level" as the basis, the two methods, diachronic method and overall planning and classification method, have been adopted to explain and classify the 57 first class measure words in order to provide new idea about measure words teaching.The main body of this dissertation consists of eight sections :the purpose of the first section is to provide a background briefing to the research, which refer to the rational of this research. Then the author reviews theoretical issues of relevance to existing research.The second section concerns analyzing the main reasons which might cause the usage errors of measure word. There are two main reasons have been pointed: one is learners show the lack of knowledge about understanding the significance of measure word; second reason is because of lack of guaidance about related language knowledge from teachersThe third part classify the the 57 measure word from the " Outline of Chinese Vocabulary Level," The author did not follow the traditional way to classify these words. In order to convenient for language teaching, the author classify the 57 measure word from the different categories: first of all, from the perspective of the semantic of the measure word; secondly, from the perspective of the cognitive, third way is from the word semantic and cognitive both to observe the measure word; lastly, investigation of special measure word.The followed four sections analyse each of 57 measure word from the four perspective that explained before in the third section. The final section provides the conclusion, the author considered that teaching measure word should emphasis on the characterices of regularity, and tie together with teaching material to acquire success in teaching and learning.
