ObjectiveStandardized training of resident plays an important part in medical education after graduation. Nowadays, many outstanding residents were well trained and cultivated, however, there are still some problems in the old training system. The training more focuses on the knowledge and skills in the training of residents, and the training in comprehensive capacity, especially in reflective learning and self-directed learning, which was not emphasized enough. Additionally, too much emphasis on the residency training system were placed for the results of examination based on the knowledge and skills they learned, however the residents'daily formative assessment of learning was neglected. Therefore, in order to improve the comprehensive capacity of the residents, in order to further explore the application of e-Portfolios in the field of medical education, our study aims to put e-Portfolio into practice of residency training programs. We were to provide a new learning and evaluation methods for residency by designing and developing a Competency-based Learning Portfolio System.MethodsBased on many previous studies on e-portfolio we look into, and Combined with the actual situation of needs analysis in China's residency training, the related need of users of the system was acquired. According to the need of users and the essential factors of e-portfolios, the functions which this system should serve were determined, and various functional modules were designed in this system, which mainly included five main modules of homepage, e-Portfolio, evaluation, discussion board and Training resumes, developed by JSP and Oracle9i database. The part of the design of e-Portfolio was based on the U.S. Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) required residency training in six core competencies to achieve the classification. ResultsThe Electronic Learning Portfolio System for Residency was established successfully, which can help the residents to note down their daily work, upload the learning outcomes, reflect the learning experiences from time to time, exchange the feedback and communicate with their supervisors and colleagues. Meanwhile, this system can automatically count how the residents fill out in e-Portfolio and how they discuss in the discussion area. In addition, this system can help residents to conduct self-assessment, peer assessment, teacher assessment of 360-degree evaluation. Many tests were run on the system after the establishment of the system, including the user interface of the system, function, performance etc. Users spoke highly of the sections of our system above. More importantly, some suggestions were given about how to revise and improve the system.ConclusionBased on the theory of electronic portfolio, the study successfully designed and developed a competency-based, simple and intuitive electronic portfolio system for residency. By this system, the residents can note down their daily work, reflect the learning experiences and communicate with their supervisors and colleagues. In addition, this system could be a tool for formative evaluation of the learning of residents.
