Background:With the development of society and the transference of medical model from the biomedical model to the bio-psy-soci model, the tasks and objectives of nurse are undergoing profound changes. Nurses have to transfer themselves from the previous role location and enter society to play a more important role in disease prevention, medical treatment, rehabilitation and improving the level of health. Research has shown that nursing is one of the occupations with the biggest pressure in the medical care profession. The high strength working pressure can cause the nurse to have the work-out, being unstable mood, excited and indifferent to patient. The long-term pressure can also further affect nurse's healthy both in mind and body. Effective social support can significantly ease the working pressure of nurses. So the study on social support and its determinants among nurses is quite significant.Objectives:This research aimed to collect fundamental data about nurses'social support condition and to explore possible influencing factors on social support condition of nurses in rural and county-level medical institutions in Dongying city by conducting a set of field investigations. Furthermore, according to the results of investigations, some measures were proposed to improve the level of nursing management. Finally, we tried to provide some suggestions for improving nurses' social support in order to stimulate working enthusiasm of nurses in Dongying city. Methods:A basic information table of nurses and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) were used to investigate the social support condition of nurses from Guangrao, Kenli and Lijin of Dongying city. The sample size was 559. The statistical analysis software package (SPSS 13.0) was used to deal with the data. The general descriptive analysis was used for a variety of variables in this study. Based on the results of descriptive analysis, mono-analysis and multivariate analysis, including t test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis, were applied to explore the influencing factors of social support condition of nurses.Main Results:1.The average scores of the three dimensions and total scores of social support of nurses both in county-level hospitals and township hospitals were 10.23±2.86,27.81±4.34,8.66±1.86 and 46.69±6.91; 10.72±2.94,28.69±3.71, 8.67±1.89,48.07±6.24 respectively. The average scores of total scores of social support with both levels were significantly higher than domestic norm with the scores of 34.56±3.73.2. Based on multivariate analysis, in county-level hospitals, the influencing factors of objective support were title, age, marital status, income, working life; the influencing factors of subjective support were state of health, income, marital status, age; the influencing factors of total scores of social support were age, state of health, marital status, working life, income and social insurance. In township hospitals, the influencing factors of objective support were marital status, income and social endowment insurance; the influencing factors of subjective support were marital status, degree of literacy and state of health; the influencing factors of the utilization degree of social support were state of health and degree of literacy; the influencing factors of total scores of social support were state of health, degree of literacy income and marital status.Conclusions and Recommendations:1. The social support conditions of nurses in this study are at a high level.2. The age, state of health, marital status, degree of literacy, working life and income are important factors influencing the social support condition of nurses in this study. More attention should be paid to the nurses who are younger, in poor health, unmarried, in high hospital grade, having less than 10 years of working life and in low income.3. Aim at the nurses'social support issues, some measures should be taken as soon as possible to improve the social support condition of nurses. The specific measures are following:①Increasing the income and improving the living conditions of nurses;②Providing professional quality training and mental health education for nurses regularly;③Improving the social security system in order to eliminate the worries of nurses;④Strengthening social support and emotional incentives and enhancing their self-confidence so as to mobilize the enthusiasm and to stimulate their enthusiasm for work.
