| Objective: To summarize compatibility of medicines in a prescription and regularity on Treating Headache with Tall gastrodia tuber, and investigate the clinical effects and mechanism of Tianma Gegen Decoction in Treating Taiyang Headache. Methods: 40 cases of headache with TCM syndrome of Taiyang were randomly divided into two groups. Among them 25 cases had been treated with Tianma Gegen Decoction for 14 days, the other 15 cases treated with Tianshu Capsule served as control group. The headache intention, lasting-time, frequency, accompanying symptom were observed before and after therapy. Trough experiments we have observed the therapeutic effect of of tall gastrodia tuber, Tianshu capsule, tall gastrodia tuber together with lobed kudzuvine root , tall gastrodia tuber together with chuanxiong ligusticum rhizome on model rat. Results: The prescription of Tianma Gegen Decoction obviously improved the clinical symptoms of Taiyang Headache, which was better than Tianshu capsule. The latter also had certain effectiveness. The experiments showed that either tall gastrodia tuber together with lobed kudzuvine root, or tall gastrodia tuber together with chuanxiong ligusticum rhizome was more powerful than tall gastrodia tuber or Tianshu capsule. It showed the scientificity of traditional Chinese medicine compound. Conclusions: (1) Tianma Gegen Decoction is obviously effective on the treatment of Taiyang Headache. (2) Tall gastrodia tuber is one of the important medicines in treating headache.
