Study On Catholic Church Building In Yibin Diocese Of Modern Times

Catholic Church building is the earliest modern foreign building in Sichuan. It has especial value to study catholic churches of Yibin diocese. It helps us to research west culture spread and communion with Chinese culture in Yibin diocese. And let us know, the flexibility, the freedom to absorb and to adapt that is so much a part of the folk tradition of southern Sichuan.The article deals with catholic churches in Yibin diocese built of southern Sichuan from mid-19th century on, including its historical and social background, development process, locations, building styles and art achievement ,especially its creative treatments, in Western-Chinese style combination. Systematical field investigation and analysis reveal that modern Catholic Church in Yibin diocese in 19 and early 20 centuries, as a part of western architectural culture, developed and changed to yield a variety of architectural form and to become a valuable part of Yibin diocese cultural legacy. The authoress focuses her investigation and collection on the main catholic churches, doing typological analysis, making appraisal of their valves and comparison between them, then draw the following conclusion:Catholic churches, as the earliest Europe architecture in Yibin diocese, breached the intrinsic Europe church mode and gradually blended the formats of locality tradition architecture into the new religion architecture. The catholic churches worked up to the east and the west combining, and appeared a special architecture type.Catholic church of Yibin diocese came through a series of events, such as the argument about comity, the Close Police and so on. So Catholic church of Yibin diocese still stagnated in the step of simple eclecticism and could not form relatively mature architecture format.These catholic church buildings make Chinese architectural culture richer and beautify landscape of cities. As a part of cultural legacy, these buildings should be considered and maintained.
