The GIS was introduced into the geography curriculum of high schools for the first time in "the standards of geography curriculum for full-time high schools" which was promulgated by the Ministry of Education in 2003. Looking back on the development process of the GIS education in high schools in the last eight years, there are still a lot of problems to solve. This paper mainly makes some comparisons about the GIS education in high schools between the United States, Taiwan and Mainland China in terms of the curriculum standards, teaching materials, implementation, evaluation and so on. According to the differences, we try to find out the weak points of the GIS education in high schools in Mainland China, so as to improve the GIS education in our country. The main methods used in this thesis include the method of literature study, the method of the questionnaire and so on.The introduction mainly introduces the foundation and the prospect of GIS education in secondary schools, the overview and the studies of the scholars of the GIS education in secondary schools in the United States, Taiwan and Mainland China, the foundation of the theory and the research methods. As the main body of the paper, Chapterâ…¡to Chapterâ…¤make comparisons between the United States, Taiwan and Mainland China in these four terms:the curriculum standards, teaching materials, implementation, evaluation. Because the difference between the U.S. and China is too large in the evaluation system, the comparison in the aspect of evaluation is mainly made in the questions of Entrance Examination between the Taiwan Area and Mainland Area. Chapter VI Sectionâ… refines the concept and the methods of the GIS education of high schools in three areas on the whole. Based on the comparisons, Chapter VI Sectionâ…¡puts forward some comments and suggestions about the GIS education in our country. Chapter VI Sectionâ…¢includes the deficiency of the thesis and the introduction to the follow-up study.
