A Study On The Development Of Modern Libraries In Shanghai Based On The Perspective Of Public Cultural Services

Since the missionaries set up the first modern library in Shanghai,the development of Chinese modern library was closely tied up with Shanghai.Take Shanghai as the center,the idea of the modern public library was spread,and the new management methods and services such as the new classification,the card catalogue,itinerant library and the mail service are used in library.On the basis of the relevant research on the development of the modern library in Shanghai and the research of the public cultural service of the modern library,this paper discussed the development history of the modern library in Shanghai by using the Inductive and deductive method in chronological order.It also analyzes the typical case of the private library and public library by using case studying method and does comparative analysis by using Comparison Analysis.The full text is divided into five chapters:The first chapter studies the change from the libliotheca to the library.The collection institution in our country has a long history,but the "library" is a foreign product.Its production was accompanied by the decline of the ancient libliothca and the spread of the thought of the western modern library in China.This chapter analyses the decline of the library in the late Qing Dynasty and the disintegration of the feudal society,and the birth of the modern library caused by the dissemination of western missionaries in the modern western public library and their practice in China,the early Chinese study of the western library and attempts of the creation.The main performances of the change are heavy storage and light use of the libliotheca to opened for public of the library,collection is the Classics of collection to books with universality and practicability which suitable for public reading.The library not only keeps the Document preservation and culture protection,but also pay more attention to public and open.The second chapter studies the public cultural service of the Shanghai modern library in the start-up period.the foreign settler and the Shanghai cultural elite and the officials as the first founders,created the first modern library in Shanghai and spread the western modern public library thought in the country.But the library founded by the foreign settlers has limited influence,only in the alien society.The library which were created by the cultural elite and the officials has a great impact.In the start-up period,the service of the modern library in Shanghai is mainly manifested in the opening to the public and the use of the collection,it is opened in many ways such as the contents of collections,the rules and regulations,the organization of the documents and the method of service.The library begins to think about the reader,the operation and development of the library from the reader's level,and the services related to the reader were developing gradually.Although the service content is single and the space is limited,etc.,overall,the starting point of the modern library in Shanghai is high.The third chapter discusses the development of the public cultural service of the modern library of Shanghai between the Republic of China and the August 13 th Incident.This stage is the rapid development of the modern librarianship in Shanghai.This paper makes a detailed analysis of the library in this period,and draws a conclusion that over 330 libraries have been created during the period,and analyzes the development of the library in this period in stages.This paper mainly studies the public cultural service of the library in this period,and are carried out in three aspects.First of all,the reading and lending service is fully expanded,the library loan service and out-of-library service such as mail service,itinerant library,branch library,the book delivery,the renewal,the appointment,the inter-library loan and other services are complementary to each other,which formed the library service network.The professional knowledge of the librarians and the collection are used to carry out the reference consultation and reading promotion service.The second is the public cultural exhibition becomes one of the main cultural activities of the library,the contents and themes of the exhibitions are diversified,which fully show the cultural exchange and the dissemination of the exhibition.The third is that the cultural speech service becomes a fashion of the library,which shows the cultural status of the library and the efforts to attract the readers and improve the social awareness.The fourth chapter studies the difficult public cultural service of the Shanghai modern library during Anti-Japanese War period and the post-war period.It discusses the destruction of the Oriental Library in the 1.28 Incident,and the serious damage to the modern library of Shanghai in the August 13 th Incident.This paper studies anti-Japanese national salvation movement and the Document preservation and culture protection,and analyzes the development of the public reading service and the cultural activities of the library during the Anti-Japanese War period.The public library service network and the academic research service and the efforts to meet the liberation of Shanghai were also studied.In the fifth chapter,the representative cases are discussed and analyzed.This paper takes Public Library S.M.C,Shanghai Library,Shanghai Communication Library and Shenbao Circulation Library an examples.This chapter summarizes an overview of the establishment,describes its services in details,reviews its services results and comparatively analyzes the four cases.The last part is conclusion.It summarizes the characteristics of the development of the modern library in Shanghai and its relevant enlightenments to the present library development and the public cultural service.The research has found as follows: the development of the modern library in Shanghai has experienced a tortuous development process,which combined the characteristics of the times and has a typical time characteristic;the public library is missing in the development of the modern library in Shanghai,and the private library established by the social forces played the main role.The private library has the main function of the public cultural service in the library,the public library has just appeared and played a certain role in the 1930 s,the public library service network is formed after the Anti-Japanese War;the development of the modern library in Shanghai is the result of the interaction between the political,economic,cultural and social factors.In this process,the public has always played a leading and guiding role in the public cultural service demand of the Shanghai modern library;From the view of library construction mode,social donation came into being and developed with the emergence and development of modern libraries in Shanghai.Social donation played an important role in the development of modern libraries in Shanghai;from the aspects of service object,service content and service mode,the modern library in Shanghai is different and in general,the service object was expanding,the service content was continuously increasing and the service function is Continuous improving.It is the inevitable result of the progress of the times,and it is the typical characteristic of the continuous development of the librarianship undertaking;The service ideas and service measures of the modern library in Shanghai are more advanced,which is a sign of the prosperous and developed of the Shanghai librarianship.It is also the result of the librarian's professional spirit and the courage to pursue.At present,the whole country is establishing and perfecting the public cultural service system,and the library is an important part of the public cultural system.At the same time,the library of China is exploring its space service,and the function of the library as the public cultural space is becoming more and more prominent.In this background,the development of Shanghai modern library is studied from the view of public cultural service,showing the ups and downs of the modern library of Shanghai,showing the change and progress of the public cultural service with the development of the times.To sum up the lessons of the development of the modern library in Shanghai,and to get the relevant enlightenment of the library in the service of public culture,this will make the library play the role of the public cultural space and make the library truly become the favorite public cultural space,it has important theoretical value and practical significance.Based on this,it is the first time to study the development of Shanghai modern library from the view of public cultural service.It is not only helpful to understand and master the development of the modern library in Shanghai,but also make up for the insufficiency of the research of the public cultural service of the modern library in Shanghai.It will help to sum up the lessons,from which to get the relevant enlightenment of the development of the contemporary library,and to guide the continuous and healthy development of the public cultural service in the library.
