A Study On Morrison's Communication Activities To China

Robert Morrison,the first Protestant missionary to reside in China,carried outhis missions through various methods,such as written,educational and medicalmission,when faced tough restriction from Christianity spreading by the Qinggovernment.He explored and pioneered press mission stategy by establishing sixperiodicals,which has attained great achivements.Focuses on collecting andanalyzing first-hand materials of the six periodicals originals,this dissertation mainlyproposes the points of Morrison's communication activities to China as follows.First,Morrison created a new press mission communication strategy to China.This strategy not only inherited the tradition of the Jesuits' mission in writing,but alsodrew on the achievements of the modern bourgeois press in the early 19th century.Itcreated a new model of Christianity's spreading to China,enriched the practice ofChristianity's dissemination,and left a thick brush for the opening of China's modernpress history.Second,Morrison's press missionary activities had a distinct era mark.It was theproduct of the specific historical period before the outbreak of the Opium War and theopening of the Chinese gateway,and an objective portrayal of Morrison's 20-yearliving in China.Thirdly,The Indo-Chinese Gleaner achieved roundabout missionary results by reporting on China to the West and striving to its missionary support to China.At thesame time,as the only publication establised in the early 19th century for missionarypurposes to China,it introduced a large number of informations of China anddeserved to occupy a place in the history of modern Chinese press.Fourth,it explores and clarifies some historical issues related to Morrison.Including the nature of The Indo-Chinese Gleaner,the textual research of Morrison's article The Press,the relationship between Yi Shi Za Shuo and Morrison,and so on.
