From1920s to1940s, Armstrong lived in the red hurricane time, witnessed and experienced the vicissitudes of the very history. He uniquely recorded the process of the Sino-Japanese war by portraying some typical person like Sun Yat-sen.Soong Chingling, Borodin,Stalin, Mao Zedong and Chiang Kai-shek in a revolutionist’s sight. That’s being said, China and China-related situation including the worldwide conditions of the20th century was vividly depicted by Armstrong. As a American left-wing reporter during the resistance, Armstrong shared some characteristics with his contemporaries, but also showed many differences. In this essay, by regarding Armstrong’s identity characteristics and his social communication as peripheral methods and taking the historical background as references, I have deeply analyzed her journalistic activities and historical reports about the Northern Expedition, the Resistance,, and the Chinese Civil War Besides, by using the diachronic and synchronic methods, I was trying to explain the differences between Armstrong’s journalistic activities and his counterparts’in the American left-wing journalists’ group in the vision of left-wing reporter groups in China during the Resistance. The first chapter is to introduce the historical background, the main idea is the portrait of the American left-wing reporters during the war and a rough introduction of their journalistic activities in China, analyzing the specific historical brand and the influences to them in a special historical background. Through a comprehensive study of their motivations fate and activities in China, it’s was expected that the special historical phenomenon can be systematicly and deeply interpreted. Through the introduction of the motivation and context of left-wing reporters to China, I have outlined Armstrong’s motivation to China and her personal information which had made a foundation to the later analysis about her.The second chapter is the analysis of Armstrong’s report about the China, including the "Red China" phenomenon in the Northern Expedition, the resistance and the Chinese Civil War. Firstly, a contest and downs and various political forces intertwined into a comprehensive presentation of the historical moment. Among them, there are concerted efforts, the situation in the war against the common enemy, the various meetings and the department of the country. Secondly, I have depicted many important politicians who had great influences to the current situation, especially the reports about Zhu De and Mao ZeDong which had reflected the political trend. Thirdly, I have uncovered the current reality of many social problems such as corruption, livelihood issues, and related topics about the development of China after-war.The third chapter aims to analyze the different identities and social communications of Armstrong and the impact on her activities in China which were functional, but not conclusive. Strong’s participation of Chinese Affairs at the time, was not limited to news reports. There were various aspects of social interaction, political exchanges. Her public communication circle is what? Her identity in journalism for her impact? In a collection of anti-war groups as early onset, I have discussed Armstrong;s transformation from liberal to revolutionary under different presentation and the impact of public communication. From the impact on her tendentious reports, there was a transition from the " objective and neutral " to " official propaganda model". As for the impact on Armstrong’s news view, it was also a change from the " independence and freedom " to " conscious endorsement".In Chapter Four, the special nature of the work itself and the time feature had uniquely affected Strong’s reports. This chapter aims to analyze "Red China" depicted by Srong and its impact on China and the international political situation at that time, including China’s revolutionary image in the eyes of westerners and western reporters. Meanwhile, it’s suggested that Armstrong’s reports had also done great impact to her personal image which brought her mixed historical critics. The fifth chapter focuses on a comparative analysis. An independent entity with many contingencies, while a group is able to show deep historical metaphor. Having a certain influence on the American left-wing reporter in China than her contemporaries, what is the common characteristics between Armstrong’s journalistic activities and her contemporaries in China? In what ways, the difference between her and Snow, Smedley exists? Through the analysis, I have drawed a conclusion that Armstrong had the same identity and purpose with other left-wing reporters, and had many differences with Snow’s and Smedley’s journalistic activities. Finally, I believe that Armstrong was both a radical and romantic reporter.
