Research On Library Science Journals During The Periord Of The Republic Of China

In the early of the Republic of China,with propagation of western library culture and the development of modern library and publishing cause, library science journal produced. The first library science journal Annals of Zhejiang Public Library founded in December 1915. From then to 1949, all over the country had set up 164 kinds of library science journals. These journals were based on the reasons of academic research, business communication, international cooperation, interpretation tradition, introducing the collection of books, communication readers, and propagation ideas. The development process of these journals can be divided into four stages, including the start-up period, flourishing period, difficult period and recovery period. These journals concentration distributed in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Beijing and Shanghai. The editors and publishers of these journals included public libraries, private libraries, school libraries, the associations and societies of library.Published contents in these journals were multiple. Firstly, these journals inherited and developed the traditional Chinese philology and bibliography. Wang Xiantang and others made an important contribution in this field. Secondly, these journals translated and researched theories and methods of modern library science. Liu Guojun and Du Dingyou obtained their academic status as the first generation of library scholars. Thirdly, these journals recorded history and work report of libraries, and exchanged library industry dynamic information. Fourthly, these journals stilled the concept of Reading to Saving Motherland, introduced books and guided reading methods to the masses.Because lack of funds, personnel, audience, and the turbulent situation, many journals’ duration were not long, issue were not stable, had a small amount of circulation and limited academic influence. But there were a number of typical journals with long duration, specific edition and publishing, and relatively stabled scholar groups. These typical journals produced a far-reaching influence in the history of library science, library journals, library education, evenly in the history of academic and newspapers & periodicals during the period of ROC. Among them, firstly founded journal Annals of Zhejiang Public Library was representative publications in the start-up period. Quarterly Bulletin of the Boone Library School was founded by only special library school during the period of the ROC. This journal presented some features such as both teaching and scientific research, teachers students and alumni co editor. Quarterly Bulletin of Chinese Bibliography founded by Peking Library was published bilingual in Chinese and English. This journals was known with a high academic level writing team, and promoted the domestic and foreign library science academic exchange.From the historical role, these journals saved rich literature resources of the history of library and culture, inherited Library Spirit of Patriotic, Loving library, Loving books and Loving each other, and promoted the formation of academic societies and discipline system of modern library science. The development process and characteristics of these journals provides some references in the aspects of function points, content style, exploring advantages, and discipline inheritance.
