Accurate News Reporting Research Objective: Rebuilding The Chinese Mainland

As a media production pattern, precision journalism is valued for applying scientific methods to gathering and presenting the news. What is the current state of affairs of precision journalism in Mainland China? What does it connote in terms of contemporary Chinese media? These are two main issues the current study is attempted to address from the perspective of Chinese history and reality, as well as journalism objectivity.To be specific, the paper is organized as follows. Chapter two theoretically redefines the core features of precision journalism as pursuing scientific objectivity which differ precision journalism from other reporting forms in ideas and operation principles. Chapter three explores the relationship between objectivity and media reporting method (including precision journalism) from a historical perspective. In short, in American media history, precision journalism is viewed as a way of rectifying the distorted objectivity arising from widespread new journalism and investigating report with the help of scientific methods. In China, however, the development of reporting forms (including precision journalism) owes to the media reformation since1978. The reformation, in a sense, could be regarded as the shifting media roles from the propaganda-centered to the news-centered. With an examination of text analysis and news production, chapter four and chapter five described the status quo as well as the underlying drivers for precision journalism in China. Empirical data shows that the situation of precision journalism in current China is unpromising, because of various limitations from social system to individual reporting habits. Chapter six focuses on the idea of value and practical significance that precision journalism should implicate for Mainland China.Briefly, in the view of China’s history-reality, the paper attempts to outline the situation and contemporary value of precision journalism on the basis of empirical data, which contributes theoretically and practically not only to the study of news operation, but to the promotion of practice of precision journalism.
