Centered on the concept of VR-based Virtual Test technology(VRVT), this dissertation puts emphasis on the systematic study of VRVT in general, with the aim to set up the basic concept, theoretical models and implementation methods of VRVT. The content is made up of three parts: theoretical basis, implementation techniques and application examples. The contents include:Chapter 1 is the introduction part. It starts with an introduction of Virtual Reality(VR), including its concept, characteristics, history, state-of-the-art, and its application in the field of mechanical engineering. Then come the discussions of VRVT, including its project background, state-of-the-art, study significance, study details and the innovations made in this dissertation. Finally the main contents and the architecture of the dissertation are given.Chapter 2 focuses on the concept and models of VRVT, including: role of VRVT in the life-cycle of Virtual Manufacturing(VM), the concept, theoretical model, basic idea, working principle and theoretical framework of VRVT, the architecture, classification, main functions, implementation procedures, advantages and disadvantages of VRVT systems, the philosophical implications of VRVT, the discrimination of the concepts of several available "virtual tests", and the application prospect of VRVT.Chapter 3 studies the theoretical bases of VRVT, including the principles of similarity and its application in VRVT, Object-Oriented(OO) technology and its application in VRVT, the basic principles of VR, simulation technology and test techniques and their roles in VRVT, thus clarifying the methodological bases and multi-principle nature of VRVT.Chapter 4 discusses the key implementation techniques of VRVT, including 3D modeling, Virtual Instrument(VI), scientific visualization(ViSC), data management, artificial intelligence(AI), system integration techniques in VRVT. Finally, based on the foregoing discussions, an integrated model of VRVT system is formed.Chapter 5 is an example of VRVT system of the immersive type VR, based on a PC for the virtual test of vehicle steering and handling stability performances, including the system configuration, brief introduction of vehicle steering and handling stability analysis, working principles of World Tool Kit(WTK), 3D modeling, VI and steering and handling stability analysis techniques in it. Finally some test results are shown.Chapter 6 is an example of VRVT system of the desk-top type VR, based on the web for the simulation of non-destructive testing(NDT), including the system configuration, brief introduction of VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language) and NDT, system structure and implementation. Finally some test results are given.Chapter 7 is a summary of the contents of this dissertation, and a discussion of the works to be further done in the future.VRVT is a newly-developed concept, and it has many supporting theories and techniques and a wide spectrum of application fields. Limited by the author's capabilities and circumstances, the contents listed above are only an introductory study of the topic, and it's bound to have many shortcomings that are to be corrected and developed in the future, and any comments are welcome.
