The I/O bottleneck stimulates the research in network storage technologies. As theappearance of the FC-SAN and IP-SAN, these two technologies develop very fast. Currently,network storage technologies have been applied to the domains that require their storagesystems have high reliability and huge capacity, such as finance and stock. iSCSI-SAN technology combines the Ethernet and the traditional I/O technologies, itrealizes the real separation of computing power on the server end and the data storagepower on the storage device end. Users can add server and storage device into their storagenetworks while keep their applications running. Although it has a lot of advantages,iSCSI-SAN has some problems in configuration and management. (1) The configuration problem of iSCSI-SAN network storage system. Since traditional server only needs to configure its own storage resources, theconfiguration and management work is not complicated. But in iSCSI-SAN storagenetworks, which there are many servers and storage devices, the storage devices are nolonger belong to any specific server. They are shared in the storage networks. IniSCSI-SAN, we need to distribute storage resources according to requirements ofapplications. As manual distribution of storage resources is very difficult, computer systemshould automatically manage the storage resource itself. (2) The data distribution strategy problem of heterogeneous storage system. Heterogeneous storage system composes different kind of disks, varied inperformance and capacity. iSCSI-SAN contains much more heterogeneous storage devicesthan traditional storage systems. Traditional data placement method applied inhomogeneous devices, such as RAID, can not sufficiently exploit the bandwidth of disks.Thus the performance of the network storage system is reduced. To improve theperformance of the network storage system, an appropriate strategy is needed to managethe heterogeneous disk storage system. This dissertation mainly solve the two problems mentioned above, also it discussesmodules of iSCSI storage manager. iSCSI storage manger is the key to storage managementand configuration, it configures and manages the storage devices scattered in the storagenetwork for users. It can be said that if there is no iSCSI storage manager then there is no IIIself configuration of iSCSI storage system and heterogeneous storage system datadistributing strategy. The contribution of this dissertation includes: (1) On iSCSI-SAN storage system self configuration, this dissertation proposes theprototype of bandwidth proportion for RAID in the iSCSI-SAN. According to this prototypethe bandwidth proportion of RAID1/0 and RAID 5 is analyzed, the method to calculate theutility ratio of RAID in iSCSI is given. On the basis of utility calculating method, thisdissertation proposes the configuration method for iSCSI-SAN storage system. This methodincludes four steps, load classification, raid configuration, device configuration and LUNdivision. It implements the self configuration for network storage system. The configurationgiven out by the method can not only satisfy the needs of the user, but also can reasonablymake use of the storage resources and avoid waste of resources. (2) On data distribution strategy of the heterogeneous storage system, this dissertationproposes the data distribution method for heterogeneous storage system. It divides the disksin the storage system into logical disks that have the same bandwidth, and manages thelogical disks with the striping method, which is a matured method used in thehomogeneous system. The experiment shows that this method can effectively improve thethroughput of the heterogeneous storage system. (3) On the iSCSI storage manager prototype, this dissertation describes two kinds ofiSCSI manager flow, symmetrical flow and asymmetrical flow. Manager prototypes usingthe two flows are implemented.
