The Research And Development Of SAN-based Storage Resource Management System (SRM)

With the wide application of internet and intranet technology, the capacity for data storage increases explosively, and the request for storage system is higher and higher. As a kind of new network concept, SAN( Storage Area Network) arises at the historic moment. By SAN, a magnanimity network storage solution, which is high-performance, safe and reliable, becomes possible. The SAN makes it true that storage resources can be divided from servers, and can provide high performance data pipe with 100 MB/s and shared storage devices managed concentrically. This makes data access, backup and restore will not reduce performance of network largely.SAN, a new technology, brings the software demand correlating with it. At present, many foreign large corporations have done a lot of research work in storage managing system based SAN. However, domestic research has not been deployed in this field, saying nothing of products.For this reason, the author had some studies on storage managing system based SAN by a project which he took part in and developed a storage managing system named StorageResourceManager. His main work is about Replication Manager module and Performance Monitor module. StorageResourceManager can run on multi-platform: Windows, Unix, Linux. It provides with abilities of strong monitoring, detecting broken down of network devices and separating them automatically, data management, storage resources management, security management and file management.The author attained some accomplishment to put forward following ideas.Firstly, he summarized the main structure of StorageResourceManager.Secondly, he put forward a key concept "pair" in replication function design.Thirdly, he designed replication module's function and realize it by programming.Fourthly, based on summarizing the existing methods for storage visualization, he put forward a kind of new idea and discussed the future of network storage.This article introduced the whole structure of this managing system based onSAN first, then it explained a important module-Replication module 's funqtiondesign and its primary technology to realize the target, last, it summarized the existing methods for storage visualization, put forward a kind of new idea on this basis and discussed the future of network storage.
