Origin Research And Application And Design Practice Of Flower Border

Flower border which originated in English is a natural,beautiful conservation-minded application form of flowers in landscape.With varied and colorful plants,seasonal views, economical costs feature,flower border can be widely application in landcape.Today the flower border is highly regarded in China.However,because it is just in its initial stage of application in China,The design skill and level still need increased.In fact,many annuals and biennials are used in flower borders,differ from flower bed just by making some different height,which have to change flowers every year,and unable to establish lasting landscape and cost huge amount of manpower and resources.Some flower borders are simply pieced many plants together,lacked of design,and the advantage of flower border isn't shown at present stage in China.Therefore,the paper focused on the study of flower border systematically and in depth,included history of border development in English, designing methods of flower border,selection of border plants,survey of border application in China,and research on border plants in China,aimed at expanding idea of border design,summarized methods of border design,enriched plants of flower border, explored methods of border application which in Chinese characters,especially on local and wild plants,promoted flower border to use better in China and show local character.The results are as follows:1.The development context of flower border was proposed.According to historical background,garden style,border characters,the paper divided the context into six historical stage:the Medieval era,the Renaissance era,Restoration era to Romanticism era, the Georgian era,the Edwardian era and after twentieth-century,pointed out the developed economy,open-minded landscape,favorable climate,continuous introduced plants and popularized spirit of garden mainly promoted flower border develop in English,which is helpful in determining the adaptability and application of flower border in China.2.The status of flower border in China was surveyed.According to survey ten flower borders in Beijing,Shanghai and Hangzhou where be reported to apply more flower borders for the moment,to visit some border design cooperation,got comprehensive information of flower borders in China.The paper discussedit's the main problem and proposed solution idea.The investigations show that flower border was not widely used in China,mainly concentrated in big cities,and in parks and other public area.More annuals and biennials were used in flower border in Beijing,more perennials were used in mid-China city,more shrubs were used in Shenzhen,the north part of China,that one-side view borders were used more widely.The author thought that lacking of design methods and local characteristics of flower border were two main issues in flower border application in China.3.Flower border designing methods were summarized.Based on research of 8 excellent flower border examples abroad,survey of flower border examples domestic and practice,the paper summarized flower border designing methods from aspects and so on vertical design,color design,seasonal design,plants combination and plan design.The author designed and constructed 4 flower borders in Beijing to check those designing ideas.4.Plants suited flower border in Beijing area were selected.According to flower border characters and analyzing English border plants,the paper pointed out the standards of selecting flower border plants.Selected plants included commercial flowers that include 53 species of perennials,16 species of shrubs,24 ornamental grass,and 10 species of new introduced superior species and 50 species of cultivated wild flowers in north.5.Evaluation methods of flower border plants and plant maintenance were explored. By observing more than 50 plants which cultivated or used in Beijing landscape,its growing characters were commanded,considered growth observation is recommended as the best method for designers to know the plants.20 species of wild flowers were introduced and cultivated,its growth characters were observed,the result showed it is feasible to apply wild flowers in flower border,lead wild flowers to show local border characters.To prolong ornamental period of 19 flower varieties,the pruning tests were carried out,and 12 flower varieties can succeed to flower twice in one year6.Putting forward that the long lasting,conservative mixed border will be the main developing direction of flower border in China,local wild flowers application in border will be the main way to show local landscape characters,and be special and innovation for flower border.The paper proposed the development context of flower border based on development history of English garden,summarized comprehensive designing methods of flower border, Changed traditional idea only concentrated on flowering period to whole growth peiod of plants when designing,used wild flowers in flower border in order to show local feature.
